High Cholesterol: Can and Can’t Haves

High cholesterol levels can create havoc with your health. A checklist for you; what to eat and what not to eat.

Foods to Avoid:

  • Whole milk and its products, Homogenized milk and its products
  • Baked products
  • Organ meats like kidney, brain, liver
  • Bacon, ham, lamb, pork, egg-yolk
  • All tinned products, including fish, vegetables, soup, etc
  • Cheese, sauces, pickles
  • Alcoholic and aerated drinks
  • High sugar drinks, beverages, etc
  • Fried foods
  • Saturated fats such as Butter, Dalda, pure ghee, cream
  • Dried nuts

Foods Allowed:

  • Skimmed milk and its products
  • Besan
  • Honey
  • Lean meat and white meat
  • White of egg can be taken daily, Whole egg only twice in a week
  • Refined oil of soy, corn, rice bran, olive, mustard or groundnut
  • Almonds 4-5 per day

Foods that can be taken liberally:

  • Raw and boiled vegetables
  • Lemon juice
  • Clear soups

Note: if hypertension is also present, use less salt in cooking and no salt at table. Avoid food stuffs containing baking powder or meetha soda, preserved food stuffs like squashes, ketchups, jams, pickles, chutneys, papads.
